3 Tips for Hiring a Video Production Company

Hiring a video production company to create a video for your business can be intimidating. You’ll be entering into a new business relationship and making a substantial investment along the way. However, this investment has the potential to reach a large audience and pay financial dividends the moment it’s showcased to the world. You’ll be creating one of the most powerful forms of advertising. Exciting, huh?

Choosing the right production company is risky business though. You’ll be paying up front (a deposit) for a product that hasn’t been created yet. Hiring a video production company requires a little faith and a fair amount of due diligence.

Below are a few tips for finding a production company that will deliver the video your company deserves.

  1. Research the company - Find out as much about the company as you can. The first and most obvious place to start is their website. How well do they present themselves? Is the site organized, easy to navigate and do they have projects in their portfolio similar to one you’ll be creating? What about customer testimonials? Are past customers willing to take the time to share their experience with the company you’re considering to hire? If so, that’s a pretty good indication that they care about their customers and will want you to succeed as well. Don’t be afraid to ask for references.

  2. Consider the company’s artistic style - The style and tone of your video is going to be very important for how you convey your business and its culture. If your business is understated, professional and reserved and you hire a video production company that mostly shoots cutting edge music videos, chances are they won’t be the best fit for your company. Review the production company’s portfolio. If they don’t have a sample of the type of video you want to create, you might want to provide them with a sample video you found online that matches your vision. At that point, you can discuss further whether or not they can deliver the style and tone you’re after. If you’re still not convinced, move on to the next company.

  3. How well do they communicate? - For me, this a big one. Good communication is paramount for a successful video. You’ll be able to determine pretty quickly whether or not they value timely communication. How long did it take for them to return your call, email or text? Was the initial conversation rushed or did you feel like they took the time to find out about your needs and your company’s goals? Did they keep you waiting for an estimate? Let’s face it, you’ll be working closely with this company for the next couple of months. You want to be sure that it will be a pleasant experience, not a burden.

In short, do the research and trust your gut. Don’t be fooled by budgets. Cheapest is not always the best. Conversely, the big budget company may be charging you for bells and whistles that you don’t need. Often times you’re paying for fancy gear and excessive overhead, which doesn’t translate to a more effective video.
